Breakdown Recovery vs Roadside Assistance

Two different services that people often confuse. Knowing which one you need saves both time and money.

All articles

Roadside assistance fixes the car where it is

Roadside assistance is about getting you moving again without transporting the vehicle. Jump starting a flat battery, fitting a spare wheel, freeing a stuck immobiliser or dealing with a simple electrical fault all fall into this category.

Recovery moves the car somewhere else

Recovery is what you need when the vehicle cannot safely continue. Engine faults, gearbox failures, cooling system problems, accident damage and anything involving smoke, warning lights or loss of drive should be recovered rather than driven.

How to tell which you need

Ask one question: if the immediate symptom were fixed, would the car be safe to drive home? If yes, it is probably a roadside job. If you are unsure, describe what happened over the phone and let an operator make the call.

Why guessing costs money

Booking roadside assistance for a failed head gasket wastes a visit. Booking full recovery for a flat tyre costs more than it needs to. Two minutes of description on the phone avoids both.
